The findings of the Project MATCH multi-site alcoholism treatment study were influential in adoption of MI in addiction treatment. The 4-session MI-based intervention, referred to as Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), achieved outcomes comparable to 12-session Cognitive-Behavioral and 12-Step Facilitation approaches. MET does not attempt to guide and train the client, step by step, through recovery, but instead employs motivational strategies to mobilize the client’s own change resources.
This manual has been adapted for use with other target populations and serves as a useful template for developing feedback-based brief interventions.
