About Deborah Van Horn

I am a clinical psychologist specializing in addictive behavior, health behavior, Motivational Interviewing, and cognitive-behavior therapy. I am currently Adjunct Assistant Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania Health System and an independent consultant and Motivational Interviewing trainer. I received approval to sponsor continuing education for psychologists in 2006. My clinical psychotherapy practice is located in Mount Laurel, NJ.

I was attracted to Motivational Interviewing for its humanistic, strengths-based approach combined with a dedication to empirical testing. As an added plus, my clients really liked it! In 1998 I attended an MI "trainer's training" where I learned from MI founders William Miller and Stephen Rollnick how to present Motivational Interviewing workshops that are lively, interactive, and, most importantly, effective. As a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers I stay up-to-date with the most current developments in MI research, practice, and training.

I received my Ph.D. from Rutgers University in 1993. Since then I have worked in research and applied settings. Since coming to the University of Pennsylvania in 1998, I have focused on implementing and testing MI in diverse research and community settings. I've been involved in projects ranging from facilitating treatment engagement among substance abusers to increasing rates of cancer screening among at-risk individuals to improving treatment adherence among alcoholic liver transplant patients.

As an independent trainer, I have provided Motivational Interviewing workshops for:
