General Audience/Self-Help Books Stages of Change and related general topics
A roadmap to change for those willing to make the effort - while not the most user-friendly self-help book, this book contains a wealth of proven techniques for self-change. Recommended for clinicians interested in applying the stages-of-change model in their practice.
Not MI, just great advice - OK, I have to admit, this one is not really MI-related. But it is the best example I have seen yet of a self-help book that helps you apply the proven habit change methods of cognitive-behavior therapy without a therapist. Use it when you are in the action stage of change.
Addiction and Recovery
"A hand across the bridge of recovery" - Steele draws on diverse sources, including the most successful treatment approaches, to help readers build an addiction-free lifestyle. Also by Stanton Peele:
Self-help from the father of Motivational Interviewing - Balancing a compassionate, hopeful tone with dry wit, Controlling Your Drinking is an easy-to-follow, science-based approach to moderation that avoids labels and moralizing. (from the publisher)
Proven, non-confronational approach designed for those who have "tried everything" - this program uses scientifically validated behavioral principles to reduce the loved one's substance use and to encourage him or her to seek treatment. Equally important, CRAFT also helps loved ones reduce personal stress and introduce meaningful, new sources of satisfaction into their life.
How to take good care of yourself, even if you use drugs - a step-by-step guide to understanding your relationship with drugs and alcohol and deciding what, if anything, to change. The overall message is that any positive change is better than nothing.
A must-read for anyone concerned about their drinking - learn from the experience of over 200 “masters” who successfully overcame drinking problems with or without treatment.
Health and Wellness
Beyond "surface" change - draws on diverse sources to help you achieve "deep" change in your everyday health-related behavior. The many written exercises make this a good resource for clinicians as well. Also by Rick Botelho:
Not a one-size-fits-all solution - learn from over 200 "masters" (who maintained a loss of at least 20 lbs for at least 3 years) how do develop YOUR OWN best strategies for weight loss. Also by Anne Fletcher: |
