Custom-designed distance-learning teleclasses are available too!
Introduction to Motivational Interviewing: Learn the principles of MI, the MI counseling style, and techniques for motivating change while reducing resistance. Lecturing is minimized in favor of demonstration, discussion, experiential exercises, and role play.
- 2-3 day skill-building format allows ample opportunity for participants to practice MI skills in a supportive and fun environment.
- Briefer formats (1 day, 1/2 day) allow for introduction of key concepts and limited practice of selected skills.
- Tutorial format is designed to help individuals or small groups learn MI in the context of their current practice.
Follow-up training helps workshop graduates apply MI skills in daily practice.
Feedback and Coaching on MI Skills: Receive feedback on audiotaped work samples according to objective criteria for skillful MI. Coaching may be provided in person, over the phone, or by email.
The “Checkup:” Use assessment feedback as a catalyst for change.
Stages of Change Theory: Use the Transtheoretical (Stages-of-Change) model to guide treatment planning.
Group Motivational Interviewing: MI was developed as an individual intervention, but in many settings, psychosocial interventions are delivered in groups. Learn when and how to adapt MI to a group format.
Supervision of Motivational Interviewing: Help supervisees to “think motivationally,” use operationally-defined standards to coach skillful MI, and model the spirit of MI in your supervision.
Integrating MI into your program or practice: Determine whether to apply MI as a stand-alone intervention, an adjunct to existing services, or as an integral aspect of your practice. Select or develop an MI manual and clinician materials for research or clinical use.
