SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT MANUALS
Research-based; free or low-cost
(Links open in a new browser window)

Beyond the Therapeutic Alliance: Keeping the Drug-Dependent Individual in Treatment (NIDA Research Monograph 165) (free download)

  • A mix of research findings and clinical strategies for improving treatment retention.

Enhancing Motivation for Change in Substance Abuse Treatment: Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) Series 35 (free download)

  • Treatment Improvement Protocols (TIPs) are best practice guidelines for the treatment of substance abuse, provided as a service of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT). This TIP shows how clinicians can influence motivation by developing a therapeutic relationship, one that respects and builds on the client's autonomy and, at the same time, makes the treatment counselor a participant in the change process. The TIP also describes different motivational interventions that can be used at all stages of change, from precontemplation and preparation to action and maintenance.

Project MATCH Motivational Enhancement Therapy Manual (available from NIAAA for $6.00)
PDF version now available online for free

  • This 4-session protocol for problem drinkers was tested in Project MATCH. Outcome was comparable to 12-session Cognitive-Behavioral and 12-Step Facilitation approaches. MET does not attempt to guide and train the client, step by step, through recovery, but instead employs motivational strategies to mobilize the client's own change resources. This manual has been adapted for use with other target populations and serves as a useful template for developing brief interventions.

Motivational Enhancement Therapy With Drug Abusers (free - PDF online)

  • This is an adaptation and extension of the Project MATCH MET manual (see above) for use with drug abusers.

Motivational Enhancement Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Adolescent Cannabis Users: 5 Sessions (free - online)

  • Combines 2 sessions of individual MET with 3 sessions of group CBT. While developed for a very specific population, this manual provides a useful example of how MET may be combined with skills-based approaches.

A Cognitive-Behavioral Approach: Treating Cocaine Addiction. Topic 2: Shoring Up Motivation and Commitment to Stop (free - online)

  • This section of the NIDA therapy manual illustrates how motivational enhancment concepts and techniques may be integrated into skills-based approaches. You will see that the emphasis remains on therapist-directed skill-building, in contrast to the more "pure" motivation-oriented approach described in the MET manuals above.

Motivational Groups for Community Substance Abuse Programs (available from Mid-ATTC for $18.00)

  • Includes an introduction to MI, the techniques and skills needed to practice motivational counseling, guidelines on converting individually-based motivational counseling techniques for use in groups, format and content for motivational groups, and tips on implementing motivational groups and services. Also discusses various methods for employing motivational counseling services in community agencies.

Project COMBINE Combined Behavioral Intervention Manual (available from NIAAA for $10)

  • This integrative psychosocial treatment approach to alcohol abuse and dependence includes elements of MI/MET, CBT, and facilitated self-help involvement. Tested in Project COMBINE. The manual reads like a "cookbook" for alcoholism treatment but is an excellent resource for those willing to look past the efforts at standardization (necessary in a research study). Includes numerous handouts for use in treatment. Also worth noting: the Project COMBINE Medical Management Manual uses an educational approach (NOT MI-based) to improve adherence to medical treatments for alcoholism.

Helping Patients Who Drink Too Much: A Clinician's Guide, 2005 Edition (free - PDF online)

  • A practical guide to screening and brief intervention for medical and mental health practitioners

Motivational Interviewing Assessment : Supervisory Tools for Enhancing Proficience (MIA-STEP) (free - online)

  • If you attended one of my workshops, you may have heard me refer to the "MI Sandwich" intervention. Well, here it is. This site includes materials for implementing MI in the initial assessment in outpatient substance abuse treatment, as tested in the NIDA Clinical Trials Network MI study. Includes a number of teaching tools and sample session transcripts in English and Spanish. I'm especially pleased about the outcome of the clinical trial, because I co-wrote the treatment manual used in the study!
