Manuals and Guidelines

Project MATCH Motivational Enhancement Therapy Manual (available from NIAAA for $6.00)

  • This 4-session protocol for problem drinkers was tested in Project MATCH. Outcome was comparable to 12-session Cognitive-Behavioral and 12-Step Facilitation approaches. MET does not attempt to guide and train the client, step by step, through recovery, but instead employs motivational strategies to mobilize the client's own change resources. This manual has been adapted for use with other target populations and serves as a useful template for developing brief interventions.
  • The protocol includes a session in which the helping professional provides feedback to the client regarding a specific problem area (in the case of Project MATCH, alcohol abuse) and then discusses that feedback in an MI style to determine what, if anything, the client wants to change. Options for change may be discussed in the initial session or in additional sessions. Follow-up sessions review and build on progress made between sessions. It is a good source for adaptation when providing feedback regarding a problem area is a relevant building block for an intervention.

Motivational Enhancement Therapy With Drug Abusers (free - PDF online)

  • This is an adaptation and extension of the Project MATCH MET manual (see above) for use with drug abusers. Again, it may be a useful framework for using feedback regarding a specific problem area as a motivating force.

Case Management Society of America (CSMA) Case Management Adherence Guidelines (free - PDF online)

  • Guidelines from the Case Management Society of America for improving patient adherence to medication therapies. Chapter 9 focuses on Motivational Interviewing for health behavior change. While it is focused on health behavior, it offers helpful tips for using MI in a case management framework where time may be limited and you are not in a "therapeutic" role.

Audio clips

These are big files, so you may not get good results if you are on a dial-up connection. If necessary, the files may be downloaded for playing on your computer.
