Handout Case Examples Both video case examples illustrate initial discussions about drinking, with patients who do not think they have a drinking problem. 1. Motivational Interviewing as a counseling style (about 16 minutes): 2. Behavior Change Counseling in a medical setting (about 9 minutes):
These audio case examples (MP3 format) illustrate giving information (again, about drinking) in a manner that invites the patient to respond and consider how it applies to him/her. 1. Some excerpts from a drinker's check-up feedback-based intervention. First (3.31 MB MP3, 2:24 minutes), a brief example of giving personal feedback following an assessment. Next (5.97 MB MP3, 4:20 minutes), a summary of feedback given over a lengthy session, and example of eliciting change talk and managing resistance (in this case, demoralization more than argumentation). 2. Example of "elicit-provide-elicit" (4.43 MB MP3, 3:14 minutes) to give information to a patient who was identified as "high risk."
