Recommended Books (see my books page for more)

Motivational Interviewing, Second Edition: Preparing People for Change (MI2) by William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick

  • Includes extensive (but highly readable) discussion of theoretical underpinnings, empirical evidence
  • Some detailed examples of strategies and techniques with an emphasis on general principles
  • Specialty settings, populations, topics featured in extensive edited section
    Read my detailed review
    See more information at Amazon.com

A briefer, more practice-oriented text focusing on application in medical settings:

Health Behavior Change: A Guide for Practitioners (HBC) by Stephen Rollnick, Pip Mason, and Chris Butler

  • Designed for application in medical settings; does not assume a background in general counseling skills
  • Presents a framework for very brief treatment encounters
  • Strategies are presented in terms of principles, examples, and counterexamples with an emphasis on practicality.

Training Videos

Links to a number of training videos may be found here. Most of my examples (and for that matter, most of the examples you have probably seen in prior workshops) are from the 1998 "New Mexico" series, which is now available on DVD.

Session-Specific Resources

Session 1

  • Tuning in to change talk: to increase ability to identify change talk "on the fly," listen for change talk in popular music lyrics

  • Background material for the research/theory update presented in this session:

Toward a Theory of Motivational Interviewing - November 2004 (online slide presentation; or, download the Powerpoint file)

Miller, W.R., Moyers, T.B., Amrhein, P., & Rollnick, S. (2006) A consensus statement on defining change talk. MINT Bulletin, 13(2), 6-7. (Brief article; PDF file contains entire newsletter issue)

Miller, W.R. (2007). A refresher for maturing MINTies. MINT Bulletin, 13(3), 45. (Brief article; PDF file contains entire 53-page newsletter issue)

Findings From Clinical Trials - Updated December 2004 (online slide presentation; or, download the Powerpoint file)

A Meta-Analysis of Motivational Interviewing Outcome Trials - November 2004 (online slide presentation; or, download the Powerpoint file)

  • Stages in learning MI, and self-assessment of MI skills:

Miller and Moyers 2004 stages in learning MI

MI skills self-assessment (I didn't write this - when I find out the author, I'll attribute it accordingly)

Session 2

Evidence for a relationship between therapist clinical skills and client involvement in MI:
Moyers, T. B., Miller, W. R., & Hendrickson, S. M. L. (2005). How does Motivational Interviewing work? Therapist interpersonal skill predicts client involvement within Motivational Interviewing sessions. Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 73, 590-598.

Session 3

Video: reflective listening as an extreme sport! Bill Miller demonstrates the use of reflective listening in an initial session with a relatively nonverbal client. (9 minutes 33 seconds)

Session 4

  • Need a refresher on the reflective responses to resistance? This brief activity (less than 5 minutes total) includes brief clips from an interview with a resistant patient, with pauses to give you a chance to think of reflective responses.

  • For more practice with reflective responses to resistance, listen to a talk radio host or political commentator with whom you disagree. Summarize his/her point of view. It's great practice "just listening" when you would otherwise be tempted to argue.

Video clips of strategic responses to resistance, from the Miller/Rollnick/Moyers 1998 MI training video series. Clips range from 1 to 3 minutes each.

Shifting focus:

Emphasizing personal control :

Reframing:

Agreement with a twist:

Siding with the negative:

Session 5

Overview of the Transtheoretical (Stages-of-Change) Model - from the URI Cancer Prevention Research Center, where the model was developed.

For more information on the Transtheoretical Model as applied to substance abuse:

Addiction and Change: How Addictions Develop and Addicted People Recover by Carlo C. DiClemente Transtheoretical model co-developer DiClemente reviews and extends the influential approach to cover the process of acquiring as well as changing addictive behaviors.

Session 6

Enhancing Motivation for Change Inservice Training based on TIP 35 (free - online). This manual includes materials for supervisors to provide inservice staff training for substance abuse treatment clinicians and other treatment professionals. The inservice training is useful for new counselors or clinicians who are unfamiliar with the basic concepts of motivational enhancement.

Motivational Interviewing Assessment: Supervisory Tools to Enhance Proficiency (MIA-STEP; free - online). Materials for teaching substance abuse treatment staff to incorporate MI into initial assessment. Some of the materials are fairly specific to the "MI Sandwich" intervention but others, such as the self-assessment tools, are readily adapted to other settings.

This is a fun one: a YouTube posting from a woman who attended an MI workshop at her church. Once you get past the bit where she shows off her new hairdo, she does a great job explaining/demonstrating OARS in a really entertaining style. Show it to your supervisees to lighten the mood!

Session 7

Session 8

Structured Adaptations of MI (more coming soon!)

Assessment-Based Intervention - the "MI Sandwich"

Feedback-Based Interventions - the "Checkup"

Motivational Enhancement Therapy serves as a model for a feedback-based intervention in the addictions. See my resources page for more information about some of the variations.

Reid Hester's online Drinker's Check-up provides feedback regarding alcohol use. Results of a 12-month trial.

Alcoholscreening.org provides similar feedback - but in a less MI-consistent manner - for free.
