Motivational Interviewing in the Treatment of Psychological Problems edited by Arkowitz, Westra, Miller, and Rollnick

  • Now available! Describes novel MI applications in the treatment of anxiety, depression, PTSD, suicidal behavior, obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating disorders, gambling addictions, schizophrenia, and dual diagnoses. Also addressed are MI approaches in the criminal justice system. Each chapter provides a concise overview of the disorder or population under discussion; describes how MI has been integrated with standard treatment approaches; illustrates the nuts and bolts of intervention, using vivid clinical examples; and reviews the empirical evidence base.

Motivational Interviewing in Health Care: Helping Patients Change Behavior by Rollnick, Miller, & Butler

  • Another long-awaited new book, presenting a streamlined model of MI application for health care providers who are not counselors by training. What I love about this one is that it anticipates and responds to just about every question or concern I have heard when working with folks in medical settings. You can tell the authors have done their homework.

Group Treatment for Substance Abuse: A Stages-of-Change Therapy Manual - this is a stage-matching approach, and less focused on MI concepts/techniques than the others listed here, but is very well done and worth a look.

Abstract
Group Leader Materials - these are fairly rudimentary, compared to the "manuals" above, but will give you the basic idea.

Video Clips:

Added 6/15/08 - This is a 16-minute example of an opening session with a reluctant (to say the least) participant:

Added 6/16/08 - This is an example of a pros-and-cons discussion about alcohol with a patient at low readiness to change:

An example of an MI-based brief intervention - in a medical setting - that takes less than 10 minutes:

Just for fun: This video was posted on Youtube by a woman who attended MI peer counseling training with a church group. She has a great way of describing and illustrating reflective listening. But first, a word or 2 about her hair.
