Learn to motivate your patient/clients to motivate themselves. In this introductory workshop, you will become familiar with the "spirit," principles, and basic techniques of Motivational Interviewing. Each weekly session includes didactic presentation, case examples, and interactive exercises.

You will learn:

The key principles of Motivational Interviewing
An empathic, yet directive, counseling style
Semi-structured techniques to help increase motivation for change
How to "roll with resistance"
To use information and feedback as a motivational tool
How to help clients/patients commit to a change plan appropriate to their stage of change

Continuing education credit:

D., LLC maintains responsibility for this program and its content. Psychologists can earn 8 continuing education credits by completing this course. Partial credit is NOT available. Please contact me if you anticipate missing any of the classes to discuss how you may earn full credit.

Who should attend?

This introductory workshop focuses on core skills applicable across addictions treatment, health care, and mental health settings. You will benefit from this workshop if you want a practical, hands-on introduction to using MI to increase motivation for change.

How it works:

The course is provided by live conference call. All you need is a phone! I will use many of the same demonstrations and interactive exercises as in my face-to-face workshops. Sessions are live and fully interactive - everyone can talk to and hear each other. Class size is limited to 10 to allow everyone to participate. You will be responsible for long distance charges for calling in to the teleclass. Extensive course handouts will be provided. Calls will be recorded and made available for a limited time for review by workshop participants only. Recordings will be kept for no more than 30 days.

About the instructor:

Deborah H. A. Van Horn, Ph. D., is a clinical psychologist specializing in addictive behavior, health behavior, Motivational Interviewing, and cognitive-behavior therapy. She has 15 years of experience helping clinicians learn innovative and empirically-supported treatment approaches and has been an MI trainer since 1998.

Tuition:

The workshop fee is $229.00. The fee includes course handouts and access to supplemental materials online. Refunds must be requested in writing at least 2 weeks prior to the first session. A $25.00 processing fee will be applied to all refunds. You may register online or by mail (see below).
